Square One Community Inc. (SOC) is a Supportive Housing Program that offers wrap-around support services to people who have been experiencing homelessness. With a philosophy that embraces the value of “therapeutic relationships”, the SOC staff deliver client centered case management services which strive to support the unique needs of each participant. Staff meet participants where they are at while actively challenging individuals to increase their capacity for independence and develop their sense of responsible citizenship in Moose Jaw.  Square One Community Inc. also offers the TENANCY STABILIZATION PROGRAM in partnership with the Moose Jaw Housing Authority which aims to stem homelessness before it begins. This program places at-risk tenants into supportive services to reverse the conditions causing their imminent eviction.

Square One Community Inc. is built on the strong value of collaboration and is deeply grateful for the ongoing partnership with Moose Jaw Non-Profit Housing Corporation.  The SOC General Manager, Maxton Eckstein chairs the Moose Jaw Social Housing Advisory Committee, a strong group of agencies and service providers that work directly with community members who are housing insecure.  It is this community collaborative spirit that has helped create a powerful continuum of support for the community members who are or are at risk of experiencing homelessness.

On October 1, 2024, SOC and John Howard Society collaborated through Reaching Homes funding to coordinate an official Point in Time Count which surveyed 76 distinct individuals and observed an additional 44 people experiencing homelessness who were unable to complete the survey. Taking into account invisible homelessness, it is estimated that 125-150 people are unhoused in our city.  It is the goal of Square One Community Inc. to end functional homelessness within 10 years in Moose Jaw through our 4-phased supportive housing program. This goal will take a coordinated community effort.

Square One Community’s work has an incredible impact on the lives of each individual we support, and THAT impacts our community as a whole.  When people are in “survival mode” they draw on desperate measures to stay alive.  When people feel safe and supported, they no longer act out of desperation.  That translates into a safer community with lower crime, a lower draw on emergency services and increased communal stability.
